Weird and wonderful ways to practice yoga around the world.
In celebration of World Yoga Day, we’ve taken a quick journey around the globe to find some of the weird and wonderful ways to get in touch with your inner yogi or yogini.
It’s not just about rolling your mat out in a studio these days: yoga takes places in every kind of space and manner you can imagine – rooftop yoga, on stand up paddle boards, with your baby beside you, or yoga especially catered for animals.
1) TRIBAL YOGIS ON THE ICONIC HUNTINGTON BEACH
A mix of hatha yoga, Ginastica Natural and Jiu-Jitsu set against a backdrop of the roaring Pacific Ocean, Californian surfer boys and girls carving waves and the iconic Huntington Beach pier.
Huntington Beach is known as ‘Surf City USA’ due to its abundance of beaches; sunny, warm Mediterranean climate and local surf history.
2) STAND UP PADDLE BOARD YOGA, LOS CABOS, MEXICO
Don’t like the idea of being cooped up in a yoga studio on holiday? Head for the ocean: Los Cabos boasts over 350 days of sunshine a year, so there is rarely a bad day to take to the water and practice your Downward Dog aboard a Stand Up Paddle Board.
Bonus: the waters in the Sea of Cortez are pretty warm year round, so if you fall off the shock won’t be too bad.
3) THE ORIGINAL WANDERLUST FESTIVAL, SQUAW VALLEY
Practice with thousands of fellow yogis at the original Wanderlust festival at Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, California. Squaw Valley’s breathtaking mountain scenery and positive energy makes for a truly unique and inspiring place to practice yoga.
Wanderlust’s diverse line up includes DJ-powered yoga classes, acoustic musical meditations or mountain meditations and even sunset hikes, and bike excursions to get you off your mat and into full adventure mode.
Or you can relax and enjoy talks and classes from some of the world’s leading yoga teachers, such as Shiva Rea and Seane Corn.
4) ANCIENT PRACTICE AT AN ANCIENT SITE – MACHU PICCHU
The ancient citadel of Machu Picchu is widely regarding a a spiritually powerful site. There are a number of yoga and meditation retreats that combine the magic of this site with yoga teachings and practice. For example, Exotic Yoga Retreats host a Machu Picchu Yoga retreat, based in the Sacred Valley.
The group hikes through the magnificent valleys and Andes Mountain ranges, take part in shaman-led ceremonies, explore ancient Incan temples and expire the sacred site of Machu Picchu.
5) DISCO YOGA – AUSTRALIA
Disco Yoga incorporates a powerful Vinyasa Yoga practice with freestyle dance and a live DJ playing uplifting house music and more.
They create an atmosphere that is inviting to everyone and encourage you to dive in deep and let your hair down, and leaves you buzzing with a joy for life.
A regular schedule of events include ‘Angels of Rock & Roll’ a Tribute to Prince, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and more.
