Resort Overview

Known locally as "Mo Bay" and with a central hub measuring around 1¼ mls from N to S, this is Jamaica's tourist heart and second largest town after Kingston. A major port for the sugar and banana industries during the 18th and 19th centuries (with a few buildings surviving from this period), the town centre is chaotic, built up and generally unattractive but has ample shopping including a daily market. The main tourist draw is 1 ml NW of the centre on coast-hugging Gloucester Avenue, which boasts a buzzing 2-ml strip lined with touristy shops, restaurants, discos, bars, hotels and apartments as well as fine beaches. However, the international airport is situated at the edge of this area, so some hotels suffer significant aircraft noise. Many of the properties attributed to Montego Bay in fact lie some distance outside town, as accommodation sprawls along the coast road to the E and W of the centre. 12 mls away on the W extremity of the resort is the exclusive Tryall with its 18-hole golf course while 12 mls E of the centre there are large hotels in the Ironshore and Rose Hall areas.

Public Transport

A railway line links Montego Bay and Kingston, passing some rewarding scenery en route. Car hire is popular with visitors; hirers must be at least 21 years old. Driving is on the left and the official speed limit in open country is 50 mph. The roads along the N coast are in fair condition but they are mainly single track and journeys can take longer than distances might lead you to expect. The locals are prone to rather frenetic driving and horn-honking; night driving should only be undertaken if necessary as the potholes and abandoned vehicles are very difficult to spot. Scooters and bicycles can also be hired.

Location

Location: Towards the W end of the N coast, 120 mls NW of the capital, Kingston. 3 mls S of Sir Donald Sangster international airport.

Position: Faces W overlooking the bay; rises quite steeply to wooded hills at the rear.Tourist Board: www.montego-bay-jamaica.com

Beach

Fine yellow sand gently shelving into clean, clear water. Beaches in the central area get heavy usage, the most popular ones being breezy Doctor's Cave (entrance charge but a good range of facilities) and Walter Fletcher Beach, both of which offer water sports; these are better than the main narrow public beach that runs alongside Kent Avenue. The offshore reefs make this a good area for both diving and snorkelling, with visibility for scuba diving best in the summer months.

Entertainment

Daytime: wide range of water sports including water-skiing, pedalloes, parasailing and jet-skis (charges usually apply, although many of the seaside hotels offer some – generally nonmotorised – activities free of charge); scuba diving including a number of dive schools; several 18-hole golf courses; horse riding; tennis; go-karting at Aguasol theme park; Bob Marley Experience at Half Moon shopping centre. Various yacht, sailing and fishing tournaments take place throughout the year.

Nightlife: Gloucester Avenue strip draws in the visitors, with many hotels providing a shuttle service to the most popular venues, although the area can feel a bit seedy at night; apart from this, evening entertainment is provided in many hotels and all-inclusive properties.

Serving Airports Montego Bay Sangster International (MBJ) - Flight time from the UK: 10hrs

Market/Suitability

Proximity to the USA means the tourist market is predominantly American, although there is some UK and European representation. Mainly middlemarket couples of various ages and families. The upmarket golfing set can be found at Round Hill, Tryall and Half Moon.

Shopping

Modern shopping areas in the centre and E of Montego Bay at Ironshore provide a wide variety of goods, from crafts and souvenirs to duty-free perfumes, jewellery, porcelain and crystal. Good casual shopping is found along the beach strip; a crafts market is on the other side of town. Most hotels have their own boutiques and shops.

Eating Out

A reasonable choice, Caribbean flavours abound. Number of international fast-food options.

Accommodation

Mainly middle-of-the-road properties, with some extensive all-inclusives and a few upmarket establishments. Properties in the wooded, hilly area behind the Gloucester Avenue strip are generally a quieter alternative to those along the main road below but do have some traffic noise to contend with. Winter (Dec to April) is high season and hotel rates then are 30 to 50% more than during the rest of the year. A 10% service charge is usually added to bills, plus a nightly tax (General Consumption Tax), the rate of which is variable.

Local Excursions - (Optional Payable Locally)

Half day: area tour around town sights and craft market; plantation houses including the allegedly haunted Rose Hall and Greenwood House; rafting on Martha Brae River or Great River; Croydon coffee-plantation tour; Rocklands bird-feeding station, to see a variety of birdlife; bay tours by boat including a wooden sailing ship; semisubmersible trip; hot-air balloon trips; helicopter tours; night beach party with buffet dinner and drinks on Cornwall Beach.

Full day: 40-ml train ride through the countryside to the Appleton Estate and rum factory (includes lunch and visits to a craft market and caves); island and Kingston tour (12 hrs); Negril, taking in the sunset; Ocho Rios including Dunn's River Falls and Harmony Hall; yacht charter and deep-sea fishing trips.
