A different side to New York
A different side of New York.
Get under the skin of the Big Apple and experience a different side of this teeming metropolis with these weird and wonderful NYC experiences.
New York City isn’t just Times Square, Central Park and Broadway.
It’s also not just the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the 9/11 Memorial.
There’s so much more to this dynamic city, perfect to explore and enjoy on one of our New York City breaks from Belfast or Dublin, including a host of hidden gems that are truly – to quote the legendary Ron Burgundy – “unique New York” experiences.
Without further ado, here are our recommendations on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do in New York in 2016 to help you see and experience a different slice of the Big Apple.
STAY AT THE YOTEL NEW YORK
A city always on the cutting edge of technology and design, it’s not surprising that the Big Apple is home to the YOTEL New York – a superbly located hotel that combines the best of Japanese minimalism with the kind of futuristic gadgetry you’d expect to see in a space ship.
Rooms feature motorised beds (which transform into sofas) and a techno wall with a flat screen TV, and check-in and check-out are fully automated. Caution: going back home may feel like you’re going back in time.
GO ON A GHOST TOUR
Woo… Did you hear that? And wait, did you just see that? These are common questions you’ll hear on a ghost hunting tour in New York, a city that’s seen its fair share of crime, murder and scandal.
Ghosts here are known to haunt everywhere, from run down hospitals, old casinos, and even parks. Are you prepared to meet beings from the other side?
KAYAK THE HUDSON RIVER
Appreciate New York’s famous skyline from the Hudson River on a kayak tour and burn off the calories from all those classic NYC hotdogs and bagels.
If you’ve never kayaked before, no worries – it’s easy to do, and just imagine telling people back home that the first time you kayaked was in the heart of NYC? Definitely a unique experience.
DINE AT THE NINJA NEW YORK RESTAURANT
Fancy yourself a bit of a ninja? After some of the best Japanese food in town? Then make a reservation at the subterranean Ninja New York in the Tribeca neighbourhood and enter a world of espionage, samurai swords and moving shadows.
It’s one of the city’s best themed restaurants, not only serving up sumptuous sushi, teriyaki chicken and Sapporo beer, but always entertaining diners along the way with surprise ninja “attacks” and an end-of-meal magic show.
GO ON A NYC RUNNING TOUR
New York may be a city for walking, but there’s just so much to see and do there that you may want to consider moving those legs of yours a little faster. A running tour through the streets of Brooklyn or around Central Park or Greenwich Village is one of the best ways you can cover substantial ground whilst learning about this great city. Y
ou’ll discover things way off the tourist radar with a local that knows the city like the back of his or her hand. You’ll also fit in a little exercise into your holiday at the same time – bonus!
So, what are you waiting for?
